McKim & Creed provided MEP design services for a complicated renovation to the five story Carnegie Museum. One of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Science Center, is Pittsburgh’s premier science exploration destination, reaching more than 700,000 people annually through its hands-on exhibits, camps, classes, and off-site education programs. The Science Center is 217,624 SF, which includes 37,433 SF of new addition.

With the building expansion and construction, the existing central cooling and heating plants needed to be upgraded. Our team worked with the current owner and operator of both plants, NRG Energy, to provide mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.

The additions and renovations included Carnegie Science Pavilion, a four-level addition to the river side of the facility; Exhibit space, office space, classrooms, and event space; New four-level atrium lobby at the entrance; and General HVAC renovations and upgrades to existing facilities.
