Due to a demographic shift in the State College, Pennsylvania area, the Penn Highlands Healthcare System saw a need to build a new facility. A hospital with adjacent medical office building, totaling 109,500 SF are being constructed with a total project cost of approximately $63 million.
The MOB, a new, 38,000-SF two story ambulatory building, will house outpatient services for rehab therapy, imaging, cardiology, oncology infusion, clinics and pharmacy services for both inpatient (hospital) and outpatient (retail) needs. The MOB will also feature a cutting edge medical linear accelerator (LINAC) for advanced cancer treatment.
The micro-hospital is a new, 71,500-SF multistory full-service medical facility. It will house 18 inpatient beds with future expansion capabilities for eight additional beds. The hospital will serve the area’s needs with an emergency department, an imaging suite, three operating rooms and one procedure room. Future expansion for additional operating and procedure rooms was planned for many of the building’s Day 1 infrastructure systems. Central sterile, dietary, and support services areas will round out this facility’s functionality.
McKim & Creed provided full MEPS design services for the project. Our MEP team delivered design services for HVAC, plumbing/medical gas, and fire protection systems, as well as electrical systems. The electrical systems included normal power, emergency power, emergency egress and overall lighting, as well as conduit and wiring for security, access systems, CCTV and data/telecom systems. McKim & Creed also provided structural design services for the foundation, steel framing, floors, roofs, retaining walls and canopies.
The facility’s central utility plant (CUP) will serve both the MOB and the micro-hospital. The CUP consists of a 975-MBH hot water boiler plant, and a 2-megawatt diesel engine-driven emergency generation capacity.
