McKim & Creed provided MEP-FP engineeringand third-party commissioning services for East Asheville Library, which is thefirst LEED-certified building built by Buncombe County Government.
The 13,900-SF library features administrative areas, reading rooms,activity/study rooms and multi-purpose community rooms. The HVAC systemconsists of a heat recovery variable flow refrigerant (VRF) system. Ventilationair for the building is provided by two energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), oneof which is equipped with demand-controlled ventilation to accommodate high yetfluctuating occupancy.
Environmental stewardship was a key component of the design. The buildingorientation, building envelope, and MEP systems were optimized for efficiency. In addition, the building roof structure and electrical system were designed toreadily accept solar photovoltaics (PV) to provide onsite renewable energy.
The plumbing system design includes storm, drainage waste and vent (DWV),and domestic water pressure systems throughout the facility, and utilizes EPAWaterSense low-flow fixtures and instantaneous water heaters with thermostaticcontrol. The fire protection system design consists of performance criteria forlight hazard and Ordinary Hazard Groups 1 and 2 in accordance with NFPA 13.
